During the 60+ years of the film's popularity, the decision for colorization was made in response to the viewing audience that likes to see the world in colors. But the black and white version of the film remains a success.
Welles' contract with RKO Pictures -- the film's producer -- extensively prohibits colorization, a position honoured by Turner when he acquired the rights to the film.
