If you want the batteries to provide the same voltage but more current, hook them up this way.

If you want the voltage increased but the current remain the same, hook the up with negative post to positive post and so on, until the voltage is what you want.

For example using regular flashlight batteries of 1.5 volts, the first way, using only two batteries, you still have 1.5 volts but the batteries now will last twice as long.

Using the second way, the batteries last only just as long as a single battery but you have 3.0 volts instead.

How is a negative integer less then any positive integer?

Because positive numbers are to the right of negative numbers on the number line. If you have two numbers, one the negative of the other, and you add the positive to the negative, you get zero. If you add the positive to zero, you get a positive number. So positive numbers are an increase from zero, which is an increase from negative numbers. A negative number may have a greater absolute value than a positive number, but it will always be less than a positive number.

Does a positive number minus a negative number equal a positive number or a negative number?

Positive. A negative number added to a positive would reduce the original to a smaller positive, to zero, or to a negative depending on their relative values but subtracting a negative number from a positive number will always increase the value of the positive.

Yes, both do. Negative reinforcement is quicker but positive reinforcement is more permanent.

How does an electric batterys work?

In the simplest terms: controlled electrochemical corrosion, which causes the transfer of electrons through the electrolyte from the positive plate to the negative plate. When connected to an external load the excess electrons on the negative plate can then flow through the load (thereby doing work) and back to the positive plate.
