I strongly believe having a hobby is a great aid to academic success. My three hobbies are soccer, saltwater aquariums, and working at a medical camp for kids with mental and physical disabilities.
I currently have a degree in Marine Biology thanks to my aquariums, Special Education thanks to camp, and nuclear medicine (no connection to my hobbies)
My hobbies got me so interested that I would stay up through all hours of the night researching various things to allow me to advance my hobby to the point of making it a career.
If it wasn't for my hobbies I would probalby still be back in college deciding on my major.

If the parents are involved and encourage their child to perform well and take an active interest in what they are learning and doing in class, the child will have a greater chance of academic success. A child's home life in general can also have an impact on their academic success, as stressors from home often carry over into the classroom.
