All those who have entered Heaven are saints. However, the title Saint is usually used as a designation for angels or those who entered Heaven after the birth of Our Lord.

What is the veneration of saints?

Veneration of saints is the process of giving honor to those saints in heaven. It may be a single saint or a number of saints or, as on November 1, all the saints in Heaven. It is not a worship of saints. Worship is due only to God. It is recognizing them for their lives and accomplishments while on earth. It is much the same as the honor shown to people such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.

Why do we celebrate All Saints Day?

Catholic answerEveryone who is in heaven is a saint - be definition, there is no way you can see God without being perfect. We know that there are far more people in heaven than are on the calendar (the people who we celebrate as Saints), therefore to celebrate all those who have gone to heaven but do not have their own day on the calendar we celebrate All Saints Day. All of those who have died in the grace of Jesus Christ, loving God, and with no mortal sins on their souls are going to heaven but many did not die perfect - as saints. God, in His infinite mercy purifies this people so that they can enter heaven. They are certainly not consigned to hell just for not being perfect. They died in a state of grace, attempting to attain perfection. The process by which God purifies these souls is know as purgatory. We don't know a whole lot about it, just that there is a stage between death and heaven in which God purifies them. The Bible clearly teaches that they are helped by our prayers, thus we remember them on All Souls day and pray for them. All Saints' day was instituted to honour all saints, including those who have not been canonized. All Souls' Day was instituted for the souls in purgatory. The Mass on that day is offered for them.

When does the Church remember all that are deceased souls on?

November 1 is All Saints Day, and November 2 is All Souls Day. All Saints is when we celebrate all those who have entered heaven and are now Saints. All Souls Day is when we pray for All Holy Souls who are still suffering in Purgatory. Heaven is commonly referred to as the Church Triumphant, Purgatory is the Church Suffering, and here we are in the Church Militant.

Why have saints?

We all become saints when we get to Heaven. To be a saint means that you are pure and free from sin. Though all in Heaven are saints, some are specially recognized due to the extraordinary way they lived their faith. Thus, saints are role models of how to get to Heaven. We can use their ideas and imitate the way they imitated Christ.

What is All Saints Day?

All Saint's Day is the celebration of all the dead who are in Heaven with God, especially those who are unknown. It is observed on November 1 each year.
