When a fruit is juiced, generally the bulk of the waste produced in the skin, flesh and seeds. In these cases, you are in a sense concentrating the fruit to produce a liquid form with a stronger flavour. The fibre that is found in fruit and vegetables is found in the skin and some is found in the flesh. As a result, juicing fruits and vegetables (unless the whole vegetable is used i.e. in a smoothie) removes the fibre naturally found. Apple juice as a result is a high sugar drink with minimal to no fibre. Although these sugars are "natural" sugars from a fruit source, they are still sugars none the less and as a result contribute to our daily energy intake. Fruit juice consumption should be moderated, with the actual fruit being more desirable for regular consumption (2 serves daily) although can be incorporated into a healthy diet (1 glass 250ml = 1 serve fruit). For those with diabetes, no more than a small glass daily (100-200ml) is recommended as the concentrated sugars will elevate blood sugar levels. For young children, water, milk and cut up fresh fruit are recommended over juices as excess consumption can cause weight gain (due to excessive energy consumption) and can result in tooth decay due to the highly concentrated levels of sugars and acids in the juice.
2 cups of fruit daily is recommended if you are a male age 14 or older. For adult women, the recommendation is 2 cups of fruit daily from age 19 through 30 and 1 1/2 cups after age 30. The recommended intake of vegetables if you are an adult man is 3 cups through age 50 and 2 1/2 cups after age 50. If you are a woman, you need 2 1/2 cups of vegetables daily through age 50 and 2 cups after age 50.
