There are many methods of carpet cleaning available and each has it purpose.

In general "dry" cleaning methods are referred to as "Low moisture" and involves the use of a chemical or compound that is applied to the carpet after a very diligent job of pre vacuuming, agitated thoroughly, and then removed by vacuuming. The removal of the compound or chemical agent can not be attempted until it is completely dry. The pre vac and post vac make an extreme difference in the quality of the job. Most companies leave this task to the responsibility of the home owner. Dry cleaning is considered by most as a "maintenance" clean and is not considered as complete and thorough as wet cleaning.

Wet cleaning is referred to as "hot water extraction" or HWE in the industry. It is more thorough and provides a deeper more complete clean. This process should involve a good pre vacuuming, then a pre treatment application, followed by an extraction. The extraction process involves a source of vacuum which removes water as it rinses the carpet.

A professional HWE should never leave your carpet wet for longer than 12 hours by industry standards. It is not unheard of for carpets to be dry in 2 to 4 hours, this will depend on the skill level and equipment of the person doing the cleaning.

Low Moisture cleaning equipment is much less expensive, easier to operate, and takes less time than HWE. Because of this "Dry" cleaners often offer lower prices for their services. HWE equipment has a much higher initial investment level and maintenance is also considerably higher. That in conjunction with the fact that HWE takes longer to do properly results in slightly higher price range.

I am a 14 year veteran of the carpet cleaning industry and will always choose HWE over Low Moisture. Mostly because of the quality and level of clean achieved by HWE. In some enviroments Low Moisture cleaning is properly used as a maintenance tool in conjunction with HWE cleaning.

I like to make the comparison of shampooing your hair. Imagine if you shampoo you hair but do not rinse after, waiting for it to dry and then vacuuming it. Compare that to shampooing your hair and then rinsing. I will let you make the decision from here.

Deciding Between Dry and Wet Carpet Cleaning?

There are multiple methods professional carpet cleaners use to maintain residential carpet. These methods are broken down into two categories: dry cleaning and wet cleaning. It is important for the consumer to understand the difference between both categories in order to make the right choice for their particular carpet. Even though the carpet professional will make their personal recommendation, the final choice is made by the consumer. The Dry Cleaning MethodDry cleaning is used to simply "surface clean" a carpet, meaning it will not give carpets a deep scrub. Although this method is not best suited for heavily soiled areas, it is a faster way to clean carpets. When carpet professionals dry clean a rug or carpet, they cover the area with a moist powder that is designed to be a cleaning agent and use a special machine to make sure the powder is absorbed deep into the carpet's fibers. After the powder is allowed to settle, the professional will vacuum. The Wet Cleaning MethodWet cleaning is the most commonly used method for cleaning carpets. As suggested by the name, water is involved in the cleaning process. With this type of carpet cleaning, there are two variations, which are steam cleaning and shampooing. When a carpet is steam cleaned, the professional will spray a solution of detergent and hot water onto the carpet to loosen the dirt particles. Afterward, a specially designed vacuum is used to draw up the water. The shampoo carpet cleaning variation is fairly self-explanatory. The carpet cleaning machine will cover the carpet fibers with shampoo foam to stir up stains and dirt. Once this is done, the particles will become trapped within the foam. After the carpet has been given ample time to dry, it will be vacuumed clean. The dried shampoo, stains and dirt will be taken away from the carpet fibers and sucked into the vacuum. The biggest benefit of shampooing a carpet is that this method is more thorough at removing dirt and grime. However, shampooing does have one big downside in terms of its completion time. Generally, wet cleanings require 12-24 hours for the shampoo or solution to dry, making it an all day task.

How often should you steam clean my carpet?

I would never steam clean my carpet, because I'm in the business of dry cleaning carpet and have done that for over 30 years. The hardest thing to do is to find someone that knows how to properly dry clean carpet and if you can, I would recommend twice a year. Steam cleaning leaves your carpet too wet... too long. You can check out my site and read more about the advantages of dry cleaning as opposed to steam. Just my opinion, I'm sure others would disagree. But cleaning twice a year with a germicidal added, helps with the germs
