Boxing can help with self-defense but you might want to check into self-defense classes in general. They will teach you how to reverse attacks and give you other tips on things that you can do to your enemy besides actually hitting them.

Also self-defense training implores women to do certain moves that would put themselves in more danger than if they just ran away in the opposite direction. Instead they fight and put themselves in more danger.
