if you don't give them water they will die, any water is okay but bottled and rain water are better than tap water, the best way to give it them is to soak a paper towel and place it near to the snail, if you cant do that then i recommend dripping Luke warm water on the soil around them and if you pour it on them while there sleeping they'le wake up to have a drink.

Sooner or later, they would starve to death if they don't dry to death. But garden snails cannot literally swim in water, so I don't suggest to put garden snails in large quantities of water.
