Samuel and Eliza Norton came from Ill. to the Indian Lands of Wisconsin, Marquette County, around 1850, they stopped in Milwaukee and adopted/fostered Emmanuel. Emmanuel was born in 1843 in England. After his family came to Milwaukee, Wi, his parents died and he went to live with his mother's sister and husband. They both died and he ended up in orphan home. Samuel Norton killed a peddlar for his horse and Emmanuel saw him and told a foster sister (2 young girls lived with Norton's after their mother died). Sam hung Emmanuel by his wrists from a beam in their log cabin and beat him with willow switches. He refused to lie and died from beating. Sam and Eliza were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Emmanuel died Nov. 30, 1851. What became of Samuel and Eliza after they got out is unknown. Samuel was about 33 when incident happened and Eliza was about 42. Some variant of what is now considered a general Celtic mythology that also was in Whales, Scotland and pre-roman Britain. This included a pantheon of various nature deities. Ireland in particular believed in the existence of the Tuatha De Dannan, a spirit-like group of beings who inhabited the island before the later Celtic migration. After Christianity the former deities and spirit beings became the fairies of modern folk traditions.
