A windmill is a wind driven millstone, used to grind grains into flour.

A wind pump is a wind driven pump, used to raise water.

There are very many wind pumps used to raise water from pipe wells (aka. boreholes), and their steel lattice towers and circular blades dominate the South African landscape in drier areas.

However, there is only one windmill in the whole country, and it no longer functions. Mostert's Mill, in Cape Town is a classic european style windmill made up of a tall conical building mounted with a rotating top cap and four large sails that was used to grind grain over 300 years ago. It is preserved as a historical monument.
