Would imagine a min. of 6 months as with other EU passes. This would be what should remain on your passport when you leave The US though. I was in a similar situation and had enough time to get a new passport in advance. Time remaining on the old one was added to the expiry of the new one. Not sure about situation re FRG passports.
Enough to get there, stay the amount of time you have arranged, and then leave. From where ever you are
