What is a DOHC engine of a car?

DOHC literally means Double Over Head Cams which means that the camshafts that actuate the intake and exhaust valves are located above the head (the part that contains the valves). Additionally, it means there are two cams (thus the double). An alternative layout is a single camshaft buried in the engine block that actuates pushrods that open the valves. This latter type is more common in V8 and early V6's. DOHC's are more modern and preferred because there are less parts to fail and offer higher efficiency that can be translated to MPG or higher performance.
