The modem will have the MAC for your PC stored in it and when you plug in the router it sees its a different MAC and it wont work. Switch the modem off, take a break and then power it on again. When you leave it off for a while it looses all its data, including the MAC address and the next time its powered on it checks for the MAC and finds your router and then it will work. Hopefully.
