∙ 12y agoThe N64 itself does not have a memory card, it contains a memory pak or if upgraded an expansion pak. These two allow the system to run properly and enhance graphics. However a memory card is required for some games to save data from file you have started. Memory cards can be inserted into the controller and used from there.

∙ 13y agoSaved game data on DS games is always stored on the cartridge itself, no memory card is needed, and in fact the regular DS and the lite don't even have a slot for it. Any user settings like the date, time, etc, are stored on internal memory.
The DSi and the XL have a memory card slot, but this is for photographs and music only, pretty much. Even games from the DSi store use the console's internal storage space rather than the memory card.

Cartridge-based games will save to the cartridge. A memory card is necessary only if you download DSi-ware games from the shop.

It doesn't 'need' a memory card (Memory Stick is a Sony card, the DSi uses SD cards), you can play games without using one. A memory card would be for storing lots of photographs, MP3s or DSi store games.
