Yes, you pay 6.25 percent (as of 2012) on any purchase of any car in MA, other than from parent, spouse, child, brother, or sister. The buyer has the obligation to pay the tax. A retail seller has the obligation to collect the tax.

Check the state law, the tax is imposed upon the seller/retailer and they are not authorized by law to pass it on to the consumer.
The tax is a transactional tax....every transaction...even if you buy 10 a day, is taxed with no concern as to others. (Just like checking out at the grocery...makes no difference how many things are in your cart, or if you go everyday or once a week...the ax is the same in all cases).
However, (in most states) if you trade a car in to a licensed dealer the amount of value they state is for the trade in is exempt from tax on the new one. Example: Pay $10,000 for a car and it is al taxable. But if you pay it by giving a $2500 trade in, and then $7500 cash (loan, whatever), only the $7500 is taxable.
