Wizards of the Coast pretty much lied to us all about that table... however, you can use free tables that have been around for years. Just Google up OpenRPG or Maptool and you'll be good to go.
If you want to find other players to join you, check out The Tangled Web at
www.thetangledweb.netYes, it requires a valid credit or debit card to play. There is a free trial period available, but after this trial period there is a monthly fee.
No, dungeons and dragons is a tabletop role playing game. It is currently in its 4th edition, and is produced by Wizards of the Coast. Try http://www.wizards.com for more information.
No, now the game is free to play. Before a monthly fee was required. However to access full features of the game payment is required.
Usually a play-by-post game online, at a place like RPoL.net would be cheapest. There are d20 resources online, so you could look up anything you needed for character creation, and if you play online you don't even need to buy dice, because they have a virtual dice roller in the forum. There are other places besides RPoL.net. I just think of that one because that is where I play... but something similar to that is probably cheapest, because if you play a game where you can access the information online, you don't have to pay anything at all.
There are a lot of people out there that enjoy Dungeons and Dragons. You are not alone. :) If you can't find anyone to play with, you could always try some of the online RPGs ... they even have a new D&D MMORPG, although it is a pay-by-month one. If you look it up online, you also might be able to find some people to play with in your region... although, as always, be VERY careful whenever you set up a face-to-face with anyone you met online... be aware that they might not be who they say they are, so be safe. Most colleges have clubs or informal groups that play... check with the programmers and the English majors first. :) And, I'm sorry about your friends. Role-playing games are fun. Someday I hope you meet more imaginative friends. :)
