Tithing is to give to God one tenth of all you earn. It is not to pay the wages of any clergyman. It must be used to build up the kingdom of God. If you choose to give your tithe to a particular church then make sure just how that tithe will be used. If the clergy of the church have to work for their upkeep, then it might be safe to pay into that church. Abraham paid tythes to King Melchizedeck, but the king never took any of the money for himself but used it to help the poor and the needy.

You can pay tithes to any church you choose. You can even pay tithes to more than one church if you wish, or to none at all. There actually is no compulsion.

added

Your tithe should go to the church that you are currently a member of. That is how that church functions. If you are a member it stands to reason that you believe in their values, direction and ministry approach. So you should support that with your tithe. If you do not like the church you should leave it and find one that you like.

Beyond your tithe you are free to give offerings to whomever you like. I don't know of any churches that are turning down money.

A:

You do not have to pay any tithes unless you attend a particular church. If you do not go to church, or if you do not have one regular church, then you should not pay tithes.

If you do attend a church that expects the payment of tithes, it is a matter between you and the cleric whether or not you wish to pay. If you decline on principle, the church could perhaps exclude you from the formal congregation, but I assume this is unlikely if you decline because of hardship. There are other churches where financial support is voluntary.

An interesting exception to this is in some northern European nations, where the government pays tithes from general taxation on behalf of each citizen, unless the citizen formally requests exclusion. Since there is no financial benefit to the individual in seeking exclusion, few have done so, in spite of never attending church or in many cases in spite of being non-believers.

Tithes are for the Israelites in their time.

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Malachi 3:10

King James Version (KJV)

Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

AnswerThere is nothing in the Bible that requires people to pay tithes. Of course, churches need funds, and some raise money by requesting tithes. However, the notion that one is cursed if one does not pay the tithe suggests that, for that church, mammon has become more important than God.
