You do not have to purchase full coverage auto insurance in Illinois if your vehicle is paid for. You do still need Bodily Injury Liability, Property Damage Liability, and Uninsured Motorist coverage.

Does SR22 cover any vehicle you drive?

SR22 Insurance is just Auto Insurance. So it depends on the scope of coverage you requested when you purchase the policy. The fact that you have an SR22 endoresement on your Auto Insurance Policy has no bearing on your scope of coverage.

Does having full coverage auto insurance in MI mean if my car is totaled and I wasn't at fault the car will be paid off?

Firstly, there is no such thing as full coverage auto insurance. This is just a term that developed over time to mean whether or not you wanted physical damage coverage on your vehicle or not. Secondly, if you have physical damage coverage this has nothing to do with what you owe on your vehicle. the physical damage section of an auto policy says that the insurance company has the option to repair, replace, or pay the actual cash value of your vehicle. I suggest if you purchase a new vehicle to consult your agent about GAP coverage which will pay the difference between the ACV of your vehicle and the amount owed. Never purchase this from the dealer and it will cost you several times what you can get it from your insurance company for.

Do I have to have insurance if I don't own a car?

Sometimes. Normally you would not need auto insurance if you do not own a vehicle. In some cases a person is required to have insurance in order to keep their drivers license due to past violations of driving without insurance or such. In this case you can purchase what is called a non-owner auto policy. This completes the requirement to keep your license and gives you some auto coverage if you drive someone else's vehicle. You can only purchase liability and uninsured motorists coverage as well as a few other endorsements but cannot purchase insurance to cover damage to the vehicle you are driving.

Can your employer ask for your vehicle insurance to drive their vehicle?

Your personal auto coverage will not cover their vehicles. What they are probably asking for is to make sure you have coverage in case you drive your vehicle on errands or such for the company. If you go to the post office to get the company mail your personal auto insurance will be the primary insurance and then if they have an endorsement to their insurance called "hired and non-owned auto" it will provide secondary coverage over and above your coverage to protect them in case of an accident. Their coverage insists that you as the employee have primary insurance on your vehicle. Also note that the company insurance will not pay for damage to your vehicle.

Can you get auto insurance without a vehicle?

If you do not own a vehicle you can still purchase auto insurance to cover you when you are driving borrowed vehicles and rented vehicles. Named non-owners insurance is a policy for individuals who drive borrowed cars and have a need for liability insurance. If you are required to provide an SR-22 to the DMV to keep your driving privilege and do not own a vehicle, named non-owners policies are the best solution. These policies will provide you with liability coverage in any car you do not own if you are found at fault for injuries or damage.

What kind of insurance coverage can we get for a borrowed vehicle that doesn't have any insurance on it because the owner doesn't drive it. We have insurance coverage on our vehicles?

Some insurance companies like Progressive will cover a non-owned vehicle meaning a vehicle in which you have no legal or financial interest. Check around if your insurance company does not provide coverage to non-owned vehicles.

If someone other than a family member is involved in an accident in your vehicle and is at fault whose insurance is responsible?

Barring any exclusions in the policy, the insurance 'stays with the car' so your insurance will pay for the damage to the innocent persons vehicle (under your liablity coverage). If you have collison coverage on your vehicle/policy it too will pay to repair your vehicle less the deductible. If there is no collision coverage on your vehicle and the driver has a policy with collision coverage the drivers collision coverage may step in and repair your vehicle, but ONLY if you don't have collision coverage.
