Most automatic transmission filters can be changed by dropping the transmission oil pan. Repost with the year, make and model and transmission type info and we can give you more details.
If you can remove the transmission pan then you do not have to remove the transmission.

No you do not have to remove the transmission. On some models you remove the transmission pan. On some years the filter is permanent and does not need changing.
The filter is actaully located inside of the transmission itself.....you would have to remove the transmission and tear it apart to get to the filter
You need to remove the transmission pan to get to the transmission filter. You'll need to get a transmission filter kit which includes a pan gasket and filter.
