No. You can have the head gasket replaced. This is unless you kept driving the car with a blown head gasket and have totally destroyed the engine.
Replace the head gasket for sure. That is assuming you did not continue to drive the vehicle until you destroyed the engine internally.
Rebuild!!!! There is no need to replace the whole engine. The head gasket is a pretty easy fix if for a machanic. You will save a lot of money this way to. Your looking to spend between $400-$700 depending on who you have do it.
The whole thing my guy
you will need to rebuild the whole motor. better off getting a used motor at a junkyard and replacing it like I did on my sentra.
Short answer: It depends on your engine, and your make of vehicle, like if you owned a Mercedes, it would cost more than if you have a Chevy. The Whole Story: Typically, when a head gasket blows, it blows because of a much more severe underlying problem. Gasket kits (the 'parts' required to simply replace the head gasked) cost very little, sometimes as little as $20 to $30USD. The common underlying problems that can cause a blown head gasket are a cracked or warped cylinder head, which are both caused by overheating. Sadly, a blown head gasket usually means that your vehicle is going to need a lot of money in repairs before it will run again... You see, once the bad gasket is replaced, the cracked or warped head must also be replaced or sent off for repair by a specialty machine shop. After that, you still must fix the problem that caused the overheating, which could be anything from a $20 valve to a $300 radiator replacement. Taking all this into consideration, a blown head gasket is a major crossroads for a vehicle owner - they must decide whether or not to spend $500 to $1500 USD, or to replace their vehicle. Tough call, and of course, the blown gasket usually never happens on payday!
Its located deep inside the motor, between the heads. You have to dismantle the the whole top of the motor to get to it. I just had a blown head gasket repaired, and the mechanic showed me the knock sensor and said that while the heads were off and the engine was stripped down, and he could actually get to it, that I should replace the wires leading to the sensor.
About $90 for the actual gasket, and probably at least $1,000 for labor. It's the most annoying thing in the world that the part is so cheap but they have to take your whole engine apart to fix it. I found a guy to do it for $400 on his off time, came out a lot cheaper.
It really needs to be checked out but it doesn't sound good. It probably is ruined as the rings and pistons are probably melted.
Head repairs are costly on any car because of the labour. Most cars head gasket needs replacement so the whole top end needs to be removed and reassembled. This costs much time and money in labour charges. If the head is cracked it is the same thing because the two are touching. You will have to pay for the part also. Some times its cheaper to replace the whole engine. The labour on engine swap may be cheaper. This happened to my 93 cutlas supreme. I replaced the whole engine because of the head gasket: it was 400 cheaper. I got another 200K and had to get rid of it because the body was rotting. Go get some quotations for repair and engine swap. Try to get your own engine from wreckers and you will save some money. Good luck!
Changing the gasket itself is simple.. drain the oil, unbolt the oil pan from the bottom of the engine, use some aerosol gasket remover and remove all traces of the old gasket, slap the new gasket on with some RTV, and reattach the oil pan to the engine block. Not a whole lot to it. The trouble lies in getting to it... on a lot of cars, you'll actually have to remove the engine from the engine compartment in order to do this.
take the engine apart, the whole head has to come off .
If the gasket went and you never drove your car to severely over heat the engine then you can just change the gasket. Use a straight edge to make sure your heads are still flat and same with the top of your block.... A: If your engine didnt overheat then you can change the head gaskets.
