No you do not need a ACT test
You can take a free ACT test on the ACT website. You can also take a free ACT test with your current course provider if you have one, or online courses such as Kaplan provide you with a sample test with their course.
Students should take EXPLORE® in 8th or 9th grade. The test tells you things you need to know to plan your high school courses, prepare for the ACT, or choose a career direction.
Most prestigious colleges will ask you to take either the ACT or SAT test. Which one you choose is up to you, unless the college explicitly states which test it accepts.
An act prep class helps you to prepare for the act test that highschoolers take to test their knowledge, this class shows and tells you what is on the act test.

The last test for the 2009-2010 school year is June 12. The late test you can personally take depends on when you need to summit the scores to the school you intend to go to. You should talk to your high school guidance counselor or the admissions department at the schools you are applying to in order to know exactly how long you can put off taking the test.
You can take the ACT regardless of which classes you take. You can even take it before entering high school.
