The L14-30 receptacle is a three pole four wire grounding 125/250 volt device. Normal wiring using all terminals is 240 volt supply to terminals X and Y. These will be the red and black wires from the three wire cable. Your choice of colours to the X and Y terminals. The white wire from the three conductor cable connects to W terminal and the bare ground wire from the cable connects to the G terminal.
To answer the question, yes only one half can be used. The cable that connects to it must be a two conductor #12 which is rated for 20 amps.
For 120 volt utilization the supply breaker needs to be a single pole 20 amp breaker, then the circuit will conform to the electrical code.
Connect the black of the two wire to either the X or Y terminal, white of the two wire cable to the W terminal and the bare ground wire of the two wire cable to the G terminal.
A NEMA 5-20 plug is a standard 3 prong plug. It wires the same as a NEMA 5-15 plug (Ground wire to the "D" contact, Hot to vertical terminal and neutral to the horizontal terminal (with the Ground terminal either at the top or bottom)).A 5-20P plug has the neutral blade rotated 90°. The 5-20R receptacle usually has a T-shaped neutral hole, to accept both 5-15P and 5-20P plugs.
No see the followingENCLOSURESEnclosed circuit breakers shall have NEMA 1 general purpose ratings unless otherwise noted. Provide enclosures suitable for locations as indicated on the drawings and as described below.1. NEMA 1 surface or flush-mounted general purpose enclosures primarily intended for indoor use.2. NEMA 12 dust-tight enclosures intended for indoor use primarily to provide protection against circulating dust, falling dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids.3. NEMA 3R rain tight enclosures intended for outdoor use primarily to provide protection against rain, sleet and damage from external ice formation.4. NEMA 4 watertight stainless steel intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide protection against windblown dust and rain, splashing rain, hose-directed water and damage from external ice formation.5. NEMA 7, Class I, Group D hazardous location cast aluminum intended for indoor use in locations classified as Class I, Group D as defined in the National Electrical Code.6. NEMA 9, Class II, Groups E, F, G hazardous location cast aluminum intended for indoor use in locations classified as Class II, Groups E, F and G as defined in the National Electrical Code.
Yes it can. The 6-30 will be fed with a #10 wire whereas the 6-15 only needs a #14 conductor. You will also have to change the cap (plug) end also as the polarity of the two receptacles is different. This difference in cap polarity is so that a 6-15 can not be inserted into a 6-30 receptacle. The tandem blade configuration on the 6-30 are closer together than the tandem blades on the 6-15 receptacle.
H1 H2, X1 X2 is subtractive polarity--either above 9000Volts or 200 KVa H1 H2, X2 X1 is additive polarity--both must be below the above values. These values and determinations, however, are a NEMA standard. Non-standard transformers (foreign) may be different. Make a temporary connection between H1 and the X1/X2 terminal. Apply a low test voltage to the H1 and H2. Read the voltage across H2 and the X1/X2 terminal. --If the output voltage is higher than the test voltage then the transformar is additive. --If the output voltage is lower than the test voltage then the transformer is subtractive.
Not legally because the rating of the 30 amp receptacle would have a 50 amp breaker ahead of it. If you reduced the feed breaker to 30 amps and still use the #6 wire, this would be within the electrical code rules.
The following are the most commonly used wiring enclosures. NEMA 1, NEMA 12, NEMA 3R, NEMA 4, NEMA 7, NEMA 9
Our NEMA (like in NEMA 3R) stands for the National Electric Manufacturers Association.
Nema Badenyakafo's population is 45,861.
Nema kajanja was created in 1985.
Nema promene was created in 1996.
They are both cable tray standards. NEMA VE-1 deals with the manufacturing of cable tray and NEMA VE-2 deals with the installation of cable tray.

Every electrical socket has a different lost rating. If you look closely on the sockets yoke you will either find the rating or a NEMA number. If you find a NEMA number you will have to referance the NEMA chart.

The NEMA 6-30 is larger than the 6-15; the diameter is larger, the prongs are larger. In any case, they should already be labeled with their ampacity.
NEMA is an acronym used by multiple organisations. The most common uses are: National Electrical Manufacturers Association National Emergency Management Association
