No. IVs are not absolutely necessary to give birth. If you can take fluids by mouth, and are not dehydrated, you don't need one. However, if you deliver in a hospital, one may be started routinely (unless you object). If you wish to have an epidural, it is mandatory. If you are having a cesarian section, it is mandatory. If you are being induced, it is mandatory. If you need antibiotics (due to prolonged rupture of membranes or a positive Group B strep culture), it is mandatory. If you are preeclamptic, it is mandatory. If you have a high risk pregnancy, it is highly recommended. If you wish to have pain medication, it may be required.
