Just to set the record straight, the presence of air brakes has absolutely zero effect on whether or not a vehicle requires a CDL to be driven. None. Nada. Zilch. Zip.

As for the C7500, a quick search online shows various model years to have Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings from 31,000 to 33,000 lbs. - this exceeds the 26,000 lb. GVWR limit for a non-CDL license, so the answer would be yes... UNLESS, it falls under one of the following exemptions and circumstances pertaining to those exemptions:

  • Emergency vehicles, when operated by personnel of those emergency services in the course of their duties. Departments might require a CDL, however.
  • Military vehicles, when operated by military personnel in the course of their duties. Contractors and civilian DoD employees are not covered under this exemption.
  • Recreational vehicles, when operated for one's own personal use and for leisure purposes, and never on a for-hire basis.
  • Farm vehicles, registered as such, used ONLY for the purposes of that farm, not operated on a for-hire basis, operated within a 100 air mile/150 road mile radius of the farm to which the vehicle is domiciled, and operated by the farmer, immediate family members of the farmer, or direct employees (W2 employees, not 1099 contractors) of the farmer.
