In most cases, you are going to need a license to own llamas or alpacas in Ontario. If you are in a very rural area, it may not be necessary. You need to contact your local government office to see if one is needed.
Llamas, alpacas, and vicunas were developed to be very efficient animals, and can live off of pasture or grass hay alone. However, domesticated llamas and alpacas that are elderly, growing, working, or breeding, may need to be supplemented with small amounts or grain for extra energy. They also may require vitamin and mineral supplements should the area be dificient.
Yes, Alpacas require shelter in all areas. In the cold months they need shelter from the wind and snow, in the hot months they need shelter from the sun. We have found that our Llamas and Alpacas prefer to have several different shelters to choose from. Varying from the shade of a few trees to a full barn for the coldest days.
You have to register with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and obtain a license from them.

Alpacas, like their close relatives the llamas and their more distant relatives the camels, do not need to drink a lot of water because they are very efficient at retaining and recycling water. They resorb a great deal of water from their intestines, to the point their feces are quite dry, and concentrate their urine significantly. With such low water loss, alpacas don't need to drink much water.
