On January 23, 2007, new US government regulations took effect which will require all adults and children (even newborns) to have a valid passport for all international travel by air. This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, by the summer of 2009. Until then, U.S. citizens traveling by sea must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization), or other WHTI compliant document such as a passport card for entry or re-entry to the U.S. Sea travelers should also check with their cruise line and countries of destination for any foreign entry requirements. To apply for a new passport, you will need to appear in person at a post office or courthouse that accepts passport applications. Depending on the itinerary of your ship, you may be able to use a passport card (similar in size to a driver's license, issued by the passport office) instead of a traditional passport. You cannot use a passport card for air travel, but you can use it for some land and sea voyages.

For US and Canadian citizens, you just need a valid passport, good for three months after the contract. All other nationalities need to secure a C1-D Us seaman's visa from US consulates in their respective countries. This just takes two days to get.
Actually, on some cruises you only need a sea-pass. Which is the sea version of a passport. Passports from certain countries can not be used in certain cruise lines. A sea-pass should work for all of them.

∙ 11y agoDue to the continual increase of security along US borders, requirements for proof of citizenship have tightened significantly for US Citizens. The days of simply carrying your driving license and being able to state you state, city and county of birth no longer works for americans.
All U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport in order to enter or re-enter the United States when travelling by air or sea.
It is important to understand that although the Bahamian government only requires proof of citizenship and identity in order to enter The Bahamas, the U.S. government requires that Americans have a valid passport in order to fly home.
If travelling by sea you must have a passport, passport card, or other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document.
