Well, to most people who ask this question, I challenge them to go out and try getting an air brake endorsement. You'll find out there's no such thing.
A CDL driver must complete the written air brakes test and conduct their road test in an air brake equipped vehicle. Otherwise, they will get a restriction which prohibits them from operating an air brake equipped commercial vehicle. However, they'll still be able to operate an air brake equipped vehicle which is not considered a CMV (such as a UHaul truck or a recreational vehicle). While these regulations are in place for professional CDL drivers, the average Joe is able to jump into a truck up to 26,000 lbs. GVWR or an RV of up to 45' feet in length (even if the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating exceeds 26,000 lbs.) without any additional training or requirements in most states, and without requiring any knowledge of air brakes, whatsoever. Sounds a bit dangerous? Indeed, but it is what it is.
So, in not so many words, no, you don't. And you can't one anyhow, because it doesn't exist.
Yes, in Michigan, you are required to have an air brake endorsement to drive a commercial vehicle with air brakes. This endorsement is obtained by passing a written knowledge test specifically for air brake systems.
There is no air brake endorsement. If you do not pass the written air brakes test AND complete your road test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes, then you get a restriction which prohibits you from operating an commercial vehicle which is equipped with air brakes. It is possible to have a Class A CDL with an air brake restriction.
On a US licence, there is no air brake endorsement - there is only a restriction for CDL drivers from operating a commercial vehicle equipped with air brakes if they don't complete the written test AND road test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes.
In some countries, to be permitted to operate an air brake equipped vehicle, your licence must show an endorsement which permits you to. In the US, "air brake endorsement" is actually a misnomer - there is no air brake endorsement on a US licence. If a CDL driver does not pass the written air brakes test and conduct their road test in an air brake equipped vehicle, they get a restriction prohibiting them from operating an air brake equipped commercial vehicles. However, this is only applicable to commercial vehicles - operating a non-commercial vehicle with air brakes requires absolutely no qualification, whatsoever.
Air brake endorsements fall under Federal laws so every state will have the same minimum requirement for an air brake endorsement if you have air brakes on your vehicle.
There is no air brake endorsement for a CDL, period. If you do not complete the written air brakes test AND do your road test in an air brake equipped vehicle, you receive a restrictionwhich prohibits you from operating a commercial vehicle with air brakes (although it has no impact on air brake equipped vehicles which fall outside the jurisdiction of the FMCSA).
In the US, no - there is no such thing as an air brake endorsement - only a restriction for CDL holders who don't pass the written air brakes test and complete the pretrip and road tests in a vehicle equipped with air brakes, which prohibits them from operating vehicles requiring a CDL which are equipped with air brakes.
You have to take and pass the written portion of the air brakes test, as well as be road tested on a vehicle with air brakes. There is no actual air brake endorsement - if you do not meet the criteria to be eligible to operate an air brake equipped vehicle, you get a restriction on your licence - L.
There is no such thing as an air brake endorsement on ANY license in ANY US state or territory. For people with a CDL, if they do not complete and pass the written air brakes test and perform their road test in a vehicle so equipped, they get a RESTRICTION on their CDL which prohibits them from operating a commercial motor vehicle which is equipped with air brakes.
Endorsement - if you live in a country which requires it for the operation of air brake equipped vehicles. If you live in the US, air brakes aren't an endorsement - a CDL holder will receive a restriction prohibiting them from operating an air brake equipped CMV if they do not complete the written air brakes test and perform their road test in an air brake equipped vehicle. Certificate - an ASE certificate for air brakes must be awarded to someone before they can legally make adjustments to or perform maintenance on an air brake system.
It doesn't exist. A CDL driver must complete the written air brakes test and complete their road test in an air brake equipped vehicle, or else they'll receive a restriction prohibiting them from operating a commercial vehicle equipped with air brakes. For vehicles which aren't considered CMVs, there is no requirement for an endorsement of any sort.
Depends on where you're at. In the US, there is no such thing as an air brake endorsement - only a restriction for CDL drivers who don't both pass the written air brakes test and perform their road test in a vehicle so equipped. In other countries, there is such an endorsement.
