Are the employer identification number and tax identification number the same?

Not necessarily. The IRS issues a Federal Tax Identification
Number (TIN)for income tax purposes. This same number is used for
Federal Employment taxes (Employer ID) if the company has
employees. However, the state in which the does business also
issues TIN's and Employer ID's - these numbers may or may not be
the same as the Federal number, depending on the state.

What is a TIN?

A Taxpayer Identification Number, or TIN, is an identification

types of TINs are as follows:
* Social Security Number (SSN) is a TIN for an individual
person
* Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a TIN for a
company/corporate entity
* Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a TIN for
individuals who do not have and do not qualify for SSNs, but must
pay taxes in the US
* Preparer Taxpayer Identification Number (PTIN) is a TIN for a
person or company who prepares taxes on behalf of others

Are a Tax ein number and a tax exempt number the samething?

NO - a tax EIN number is an Employer Identification Number. This
is like a Social Security Number of sorts for a business. If a
business is Incoporated and/or has employees this number identifies
the business as such and is the number the payroll taxes are filed
under. It has nothing to do with the tax exempt status.

Does an employer have to pay FICA for a part time employee?

Yes they do. All wages are subject to FICA and Medicare Taxes.
The employer and employee each pay 6.2% of the gross income for
Social Security Tax and each pays 1.45% of the gross income for
Medicare Taxes. The number of hours works has nothing to do with
whether or not taxes are taken out for these taxes.
Asked in Housing Associations
Does an unincorporated condo association need a federal employer indentification number?

If the association pays employees, or if the association files
federal taxes, then a Federal Employer Identification Number is
required.
It's a good idea to have one; it can help legitimize and
authenticate the association. As well, the association can consider
incorporation as a non-profit corporation, which also helps
legitimize and authenticate it.
Otherwise, with no legal standing, how does the association
conduct its business?

Does your employer pay FICA taxes?

Yes. The way it works in most cases is that you pay FICA taxes
in the amount of 6.2% of your gross income and your employer also
pays the same amount. Also you are required to pay 1.45% of your
gross income for Medicare tax and your employer also matches that
amount. So in total you are paying for half of these two taxes and
your employer pays for half of the total taxes for these two
taxes.

How much does an employer match in payroll taxes?

An employer matches the amount of FICA (Social Security) and
Medicare taxes which are 6.2% and 1.45% of your gross income
respectively. The same amount is paid by the employer and the
employee toward these two taxes. Only the employee pays their
Federal, State, and/or Local Income tax withholding but the
employer is responsible for withholding these taxes and remitting
all of them to the IRS on a timely basis.

What are the advantage of a taxpayer identification number?

Your taxpayer identification number lets the government confirm
that you have paid taxes on various
activities and transactions, and ask you about it if you have not.
It also lets you legally participate in certain activities and
investments without have a portion of the income withheld as it is
paid to you. Finally, it helps you identify yourself unambiguously
to the government when paying your income taxes, reducing the
chance of your being mistaken for someone else who still needs to
pay taxes.
