Couple different variables here, one being state law, and one being gross vehicle weight. If it's under 26,000 lbs. (for example, something like an F650), then no, because it would be under CDL weight.

If it's over 26,000 lbs. GVWR, then it'll depend on a number of things. If it's registered as a farm vehicle, or is unregistered and will not leave the property the farm is on, you can get by without a CDL. If it will be traveling on public roads, then it depends on what your state permits. Your state may or may not permit the driver to have a non-commercial Class B licence.

If you intend to be able to hire out the dump truck to third parties, then it needs to be registered as a commercial vehicle, have a state fuel tax or IFTA sticker, have a DOT registration number or state exemption number, and will require the driver to possess a Class B CDL. I know a lot of farmers who have dump trucks for use on their farm, but also hire them out in order to generate extra revenue for themselves.

Ultimately, you would need to contact your state's Division of Motor Vehicles and explain the full extent of what the truck's usage would be in order to get their determination.

You would need a Class A CDL for Dump Truck. It's not as intense as more restrictive classes of CDL.

When applying for dump truck driving jobs do you need a CDL license?

Yes. In most cases you will need a CDL Class B license because of the weight of the truck. However, if you would be driving a semi with a dump trailer, you would need a CDL Class A license.

Do you need a cdl to drive a farm registered dump truck in Wisconsin?

If it's a registered farm vehicle, then a CDL is not required, provided that:It is operated exclusively for farm useIt is not operated on a for-hire basisIt is operated within a 150 mile radius of the farmIt is operated by the farmer, members of the farmer's immediate family, or direct employees of the farmer

Do you need a CDL for a dump truck?

A dump truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of more than 26,000 lbs. will require a CDL. The only exceptions would be...It is a registered farm vehicle, operated exclusively for the purposes of that farm and not on a third party for-hire basis, is operated within 150 road/100 air miles of the farm it belongs to, and is operated by the farmer, immediate family members of the farmer, or a direct employee of the farmer. It is an emergency vehicle operating in an emergency function. Municipal snowplows are considered emergency vehicles, and are exempt from requiring a CDL under federal law when used for snow removal duties. It is a military vehicle, operated by military personnel in the course of their duties.A dump truck under 26,001 lbs. GVWR would require a CDL only if it's hauling a quantity of hazardous materials which requires the display of HAZMAT placards. Dump trucks hauling load of contaminated soil would be such an example.

Do you need a CDL to drive a dump truck under 26000GVWR?

Not unless you're hauling something such as contaminated soil, which requires a hazmat endorsement.

If you buy a tri axle dump truck in Illinois and are driving it back to Massachusetts under a farm license plate do you need a CDL to drive it?

If the gross vehicle weight rating of the truck is 26,001 pounds or more, you need a CDL to operate it on the public highways. Since it's not a combination vehicle, a Class B CDL will do fine. Additionally, farm licence plates are only valid when operated by the farmer who registered the vehicle under those plates, their immediate family, or employees of that farmer, and only within a 150 mile radius of their farm. Not only would it be illegal for you to operate that vehicle without a CDL, but your use of a farm licence plate to transport it more than 150 miles from that farm (as well as not being a family member or employee of that farmer) is highly illegal.

Do you need cdl's for a dump truck farm and not for hire over 32000?

"Not for hire" is irrelevant. Not being for hire doesn't exempt it from requiring a CDL. What is relevant is the farm bit. This may exempt it. You won't need a CDL, so long as all of the following conditions are met:The truck is registered as a farm truck. The truck is used only for the purposes of that farm, and nothing more. The vehicle is not hired out on a third party basis (which is illegal with farm plates, anyhow)The vehicle remains within a 150 mile radius of the farm it belongs to.The vehicle is operated by the farmer, an immediate family member of the farmer, or a direct employee of the farmer (if you're paid on a W2, you're a direct employee; if you're paid on a 1099, you're a contractor, and not a direct employee).Every single one of those conditions must be met in order for the vehicle to be exempt from requiring a Class B CDL.
