In most areas of the US the minimum requirement is 500 hours of training that can be completed in six months of full time at an accepted school. There are certifications, licenses, or some form of state regulation that is required currently in 42 states, including the District of Columbia. Some states do their own licensing exams while others use the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTM.) To be eligible to take the examination through the NCBTM, applicants must have 500 hours of formal training at a state licensed training institute or approved school including: 1) At least 125 hours in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. 2) 200 hours in massage and bodywork assessment, theory and practice. 3) 40 hours of in-class, supervised instruction in pathology. 4) 10 hours of business instruction, including at least 6 hours of ethics. 5) 125 hours of additional in-class, supervised instruction in a related area. Starting in January of 2009, there is another test called the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination). It is governed by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Currently there are 31 states that have joined this new testing association.

There are lots of schools offering massage education. Hands-on teaching is one of the most important aspects. A solid understanding of proper hand and body mechanics as well as anatomy and physiology are also key. Ask local therapists what school they went to and what they liked about it. Most reputable schools have been in business 10 years or more.

Be careful, some schools use questionable or unethical tactics to get your money. I had lots of referrals to the school I finally chose and it has been the best choice I've ever made. I am now teaching at the school as an assistant instructor five years later. The Cortiva Institute is the largest in the nation with over 8 separate schools and campuses, while the Swedish Institute in NY is the oldest. There are also good schools in North Carolina, such as Natural Touch in Greensboro and Hickory, www.naturaltouchschools.com.

There are now more 2 year college massage programs available which make it more affordable.

Figure out what you need in your state, what your personal need are as far as how you learn best and find a school that can fulfill your needs.

You need to go to a school that is approved by your province's massage therapy college (CMTO for Ontario). The program is 2-3 years, depending on your schedule. Some courses you take include Anatomy and Physiology, Pathology, Palpation, Massage Theory and Techniques, and Advanced Theory and Techniques. Of course this depends on your school. Once you graduate, you are eligible to take your province's registration exam and get your full license.
