no, you should be able to replace it with out disassembling the whole starter....
Begin by removing the positive cable from your battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new Pontiac Montana battery.
Follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will lead you right to the starter.

I can't tell you precisely on your model, but if you follow the positive (red) battery cable down from the battery, it should connect to one end of the starter. Hope that helps a little.
Generally, the starter sits right at the front bottom of the engine. On my '96, I could just see it from the engine bay. If you follow the positive (red) battery cable from the battery, it will go directly to the battery.
