Yes u need to use premium fuel ..... by 1999 it was 92 unleaded but 87 will work too .... using lower fuel grades can cause detonation which is basically Knocking (also called knock, detonation, spark knock, pinging or pinking) in spark-ignition internal combustion engines occurs when combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder starts off correctly in response to ignition by the spark plug, but one or more pockets of air/fuel mixture explode outside the envelope of the normal combustion front.
The fuel-air charge is meant to be ignited by the spark plug only, and at a precise time in the piston's stroke cycle. Knock occurs when the peak of the combustion process no longer occurs at the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The shock wave creates the characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and cylinder pressure increases dramatically. Effects of engine knocking range from inconsequential to completely destructive.
Knocking should not be confused with pre-ignition. They are two separate events, however, pre-ignition is usually followed by knocking..

The fuel filter on my 1999 E320 is located on the drivers side just in front of the rear tire. There is a plastic cover with 3 plastic nuts; remove those and you will see the filter. DominicArnold@cox.net

Where is the fuel pump relay
E320 fuel pump is located outside and forward of the fuel tank - very easy access once the tank is drained, and this car is one of the very few that has a gas tank drain plug on the bottom of the tank.
I used top octane in my 1998 E320 before gas prices got up to $4.00 - now I use the middle octane. Mercedes recommends Premium fuel because of the way the engine is designed and the sensors. It runs much better on premium anyways. and if you cant afford the premium gas you have no business owning a mercedes.
Their is only one fuel pump on this vehicle.
A. No fuel B. No spark
Mounted on top and inside the fuel tank.
