well yes and no, you will need it to pull out from a stop unless you can crank the engine to get moving or your gonna pop start it every time, also for shifting gear, you can shift without the clutch if you know what your doing, but it will shorten the life of the transmission,

It is a hydraulic clutch. An excess of fluid in the system will cause it to be hard to pull back. Either that, or you need to lift some weights so that you won't notice.
Sounds like clutch slip. Either the clutch springs need adjusting or the clutch plates are worn out.

The 2002 PT cruiser is equipped with an automatic transmission. The automatic transmission does not have a standard clutch. The transmission will need to be completely rebuilt.
To install the clutch on a 1987 Honda Civic the transmission will need to be taken off. Remove all the components to drop the transmission. Once removed loosen the bolts that hold the flywheel and clutch disks. Replace the parts.

im thinking you need a new clutch.

Follow the clutch cable to the transmission where there is like a not to turn up or down depending on how you need to adjust the clutch. Just can not remember which way to turn for what maybe someone else will add that part
