The whole point of a collective passport is that you don't have to have individual passports. However, the government still recommends individual passports.
(Note: not all countries offer, or accept, collective passports. It seems to be a European thing.)
That will depend on a lot of things, like your own nationality. As a general rule you should always bring a passport with you when you are travelling internationally, as you are at least going to be asked for photo ID of some sort.

No. You need a valid passport to cross borders. Especially into a developed nation like France that is going to have the technology to scan your passport and realise that it has expired. An exeption however will occur if you are travelling from a bordering European nation within the Eurozone e.g. Belgium or Italy or Germany. In that case, your passport won't be checked. Though I am unsure as to the legality of doing that (entering on an expired passport) if you're not a European citizen.
