Yes. Vehicle recovery is an additional duty as a mechanic. Often enough, mechanics have to provide security at the recovery location or can easily be ambushed along the route to the stranded vehicle. When forward operating bases are attacked by indirect fire (mortars and rockets), it is not uncommon for the motor pool to be struck by rounds, as they take up a vast majority of the land used in smaller bases. Mechanics train right alongside infantrymen and usually travel with field artillery to the field.
