He's pretty smart. Given that he probably helps pay for the house through child support or alimony, renting to her gets him some of the money back. And it takes care of the kids. If you are that insecure about the relationship, I'd say you aren't really serious about him.

Realize that exes who are going to get back together already would have and stop being insecure. Many divorced couples find that they are perfectly able to get along with each other after the stress of being in a relationship with each other is gone. Any physical attraction they felt towards each other probably died long before the marriage actually ended and the fact that they share children gives them something in common that they don't share with any (or many) other people. Speaking from personal experience I get along pretty well with my ex husband and we've even gone on camping trips with our daughter and our new mates. Sometimes we may share a joke from the past that our new partners don't get, or agree about politics when we don't agree with our new spouses, but that just goes to show that there were a few reasons for the marriage, even if there were a lot more reasons for the divorce. The way I explained it to my sister was that now after all the bitterness and emotions have worn off, my ex feels kind of like a brother that I grew up in the same house with, we share a lot of the same memories, but there are a lot of things we'll never really get about each other as well. Really that's what having been through a divorce is like, you spend a few years growing up and then you move on to your real life...
