The deciding factor would be is he just inviting YOU to be with HIM (hmmmm) in which case I would suggest taking condoms and the want ads. If its a group of employees attending at the very least it would be nice and polite gesture to pool your funds for a nice appreciative gift, a pen set or digital picture frame for his desk perhaps, a humorous gift he might like but in good taste, etc.
