I do personally think that social security numbers are needed to prevent identity theft. Although there are many instances of identity theft, the instances would be greater without social security numbers to help identify citizens with.

Passwords, Pin numbers, Social Security Number, any information that is of a personal nature and that can be used to access your most personal data should not be kept in a file. This could lead to identity theft, and/or financial ruining. Protect that which is scared to you.
On the back of your card there should be a strip with numbers on it. The security code is the last three digits. :)
