No. 4wd helps with pulling traction. Brakes work exactly the same on a 4wd as a 2wd and the 4wd helps none at all in stopping.
if the 4x4 isn't working then you need to check your transfer case. is it making any noises? or did it just stop working?
this indicates that the 4x4 is ingaged or that the sensor think that it is. if you have a push button 4x4 most times it is not disengaging from 4x4 try going backwards a few feet after taking it out of 4x4 mode to see if this does not help .
YES it is. But you must stop if you want to go to 4 low.
help
it will help you get through mud snow ect
4X4 High: Slow to under 5 M.P.H., let off on gas, grasp 4X4 lever and securely put in 4-High. 4X4 Low: Stop vehicle, put in nutreul, grasp 4X4 lever and securely put in 4-low.
To the floor, you'll just have to stop at every gas station
The 1500 4X4 went to the independent front axle in 2002. The 2500 and 3500 4X4's still have a solid front axle.
A name would help.

My Explorer did that and I had to take the dash panel out where you will find a black or green box right beside where the radio goes, you will have to replace it.
