That depends. If you are talking about a plural, then you don't:

There were 10 Americans in the room.

If you are talking about something belonging to one American, then you do:

The American's camera had the best photos.

The word Americans is a Proper plural noun. It requires no apostrophe.

Even though America includes all of the Americas, overseas people often refer to citizens of the US as "Americans".


If the word Americans has a possession or belonging, it needs an apostrophe.

The Americans' rights were ignored. (plural possessive)

The police raided the Americans' hotel rooms.
