The capacitor is wired across the motor wires for suppression. The diode (1N4007) goes in series with the motor for the low speed option on two speed bamixs. The diode tends to fail due to it only being a 1A rating. I suggest a 1N5408 instead, but care must be taken orienting it in such a way as it fits within the housing and mouldings.
