What are the main grape varieties in burgundy?

Burgundy wine (French: Bourgogne) is wine made in the Burgundy AOC region of France. Most wine produced here is either red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wine made from Chardonnay grapes, although red and white wines are also made from other grape varieties, such as Gamay and Aligoté respectively. Small amounts of rose and sparkling wine are also produced.

Is Shiraz heavier than Merlot?

There is no absolute answer to that question. Generally cabernet is known to have more tannins than shiraz, however both shiraz and cabernet can be very full bodied, tannic, rich, and long-lived wines.

What is the difference between a claret and burgundy?

Claret refers to a red wine from Bordeaux, France, typically made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Burgundy, on the other hand, refers to a wine region in eastern France known for producing primarily Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Burgundy wines are typically lighter and more delicate compared to the fuller-bodied Claret wines.

What is the sugar content of 6 ounces of red wine?

I found this on the Wine Spectator site: "Q: Could you tell me how Port, Tawny Port, and Cabernet Sauvignon compare as far as sugar content goes? -Martin A: Each wine is going to vary a bit from producer to producer, but here is some general data from the USDA nutrient database: "red table wine", a category which includes Burgundy, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, contains .62 g of sugar per 100 g of wine (.91 g per 5 oz. serving), while "sweet dessert wine", a category which includes marsala, port and Madeira, contains 7.78g of sugar per 100g of wine (4.6 g of sugar per 2 oz. serving). What are some of your favorite wines?

My top choice for a white wine is a chardonnay from the napa Valley in Callifornia. I'm more of a white wine drinker than red, but a cabernet savignon from Callifornia is a very nice, easy drinking red wine.

What wine do you serve with surf and turf?

Chardonnay would be a good choice. This popular dry white wine is more full bodied than other white wines. Chardonnay has aromas of fruits and acidity. The aroma typically has flavors of lemon or grapefruit. Fermentation in new oak barrels results in a rich, buttery taste often described as toastiness, vanilla, apple, nutty, or toffee. Chardonnays aged in French oak result in a milder flavor than those aged in American oak. Another possibility is Sauvignon Blanc. Lighter than Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc usually has a grassy citrus aroma. Flavors range from apple, pear, green tea, limes and freshly mowed grass. You can often detect a little smokiness. California Sauvignon Blancs sometimes have a melon flavor. This is a crisp light wine with a strong acid finish. It is also called Fume Blanc.American Sauvignon Blanc tends to be grassier than those produced in New Zealand.

How much is a signed bottle of Pat Paulsen Vineyards Sonoma County 1981 Cabernet Sauvignon worth?

If there is any wine in it, it probably has gone bad by now. It may have been worth more at the time you got it and there was still wine it. White wine, like sauvignon blanc, is not meant to be aged, but consumed within 2 to 3 years after it was produced. The bottle itself may have some value to a collector, but you have to find one.

What's the difference between a French Bordeaux and a California Cabernet sauvignon?

In the U.S. varietal wines are named after the dominant grape used to make them. In France (except for Alscace) they're named for the region in which the grapes are grown. The predominant grape in Bordeaux is Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but some of the grand crus chateaus use mostly, if not exclusively, Merlot. It is worth noting that very few wine experts would fail to recognize grand crus or premiere crus Bordeaux or would confuse them with California Cabernets. The so-called great-growth and first-growth wines are affected by their unique terroir, which imparts unmistakable attributes and charactersitics to them that California wines do not possess. To our California palate, a Bourdeaux will taste quite different from a Cabernet. French wines (in general) have a more earthy flavor and it does have to do with the land and the many, many years the vines have been producing.Bordeaux is somewhat of an acquired taste. After drinking Cabs from CA, you may be surprised. It's fun to do a taste test. Some good info given so far, well done guys. Here's few extra bits you might find interesting. The five red grapes grown in Bordeaux are: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec. ALL Bordeaux reds are a blend of one or more of those grapes. Its worth nothing that if a bottle of Californian wine states the grape variety only 75% of the wine must be made from that grape (85% if its being sold into the EU), so basically most Californian Cabernet Sauvignons may be blends!
