Does Clash of Clans require internet connection?

Yes, it does require internet. However although it is rather irrelevant, if you are connected to the internet and then move out of range, the game will still continue to function. You will be able to train your troops, collect elixr, etc. However, you will not be able to do anything that needs to bring up recent information such as checking your clan status, attacking another player, or chatting.

It matches you with other players. Whenever you do a battle, you are actually battling against another Clash player. You need internet to connect to the other villages.
