Although conventional wisdom holds that humans need eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day, the truth is a little more complicated. According to The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, an adequate daily fluid intake is about 125 ounces (3.7 liters) for men and about 91 ounces (2.7 liters) for women. However, keep in mind that these fluid intake guidelines include all sources of water, not just glasses of the stuff. In fact, we get about 20 percent of our daily water from what we eat, especially fruits and vegetables.

The truth is that when it comes to hydration, one size does not fit all. There are many factors that should influence an individual’s daily water intake, including where you live, your activity level, and your overall health. So while there is no scientific evidence that supports the “8x8 rule,” staying hydrated is still important. The best advice is to trust your own body, and when you’re thirsty, reach for water first.

The rate of drinking water depends on the weight of your body. This is usually 3% of your weight. Suppose you weigh 60 kg, then your norm is 1.8 liters of fluid per day. But! I think everything is much simpler:

  1. When you’re thirsty, drink.
  2. When you’re not thirsty anymore, stop.
  3. During high heat and exercise, make sure to drink enough to compensate for the lost fluids.

Balance (moderation) is the key to harmony in everything. Excess and scarcity is harmful in all things.

Ideally one should drink around 4–5 liters of water everyday. Drinking too much water is harmful. It will lead to bloating and stomach ache. it is more dangerous if you drink it in short span of time. One should drink only that much water as a healthy person needs.

Drinking too little can cause water intoxication, which causes fluid and discomfort of the blood in the body. This condition decreases the levels of sodium in your body, causing diseases, weight loss, problems, expulsion and inflammation of the brain at times.

Our urine color is a simple and effective indicator of water needs of our body. If it is colorless, then we have sufficient water in our body for it to function properly. If not then we need to drink water to make it so.

They used to believe it was very beneficial to drink A LOT of water. However they say to drink when you feel like it, naturally. Perhaps half a glass before you go to bed and when you wake up.

You don’t necessarily need to drink eight glasses of water per day. Your needs are based on your size, physical activity, environmental temperature and other factors. It depends on how thirsty you are. On a hot day when you working outside, you can drink the equivalent of more than eight glasses of water.

Maintaining an adequate amount of water in your body is vitally important to your life. Without water, you’ll only be able to survive a matter of days.

Generally, your thirst will guide you when it comes to how much water you should drink. Keep in mind that exercise, hot temperatures, and illness can contribute to an increased intake of water to stay healthy.

The current IOM recommendation for people ages 19 and older is around 131 ounces for men and 95 ounces for women. This refers to your overall fluid intake per day, including anything you eat or drink that contains water, like fruits or vegetables.

Of this total, men should get around 13 cups from beverages. For women, it’s 9 cups.

There are a lot of good points, but while not perfect*, I am a firm believer in the general rule of Half Your body weight in ounces.

That is Pounds and Ounces. That means that the old 8 eight ounce glasses a day would be great for a 128 pound person. Why is this important? Because not everyone is the same. A bigger person with more cells requires more water than a smaller person.

This is a guideline, and has many factors:

Physical activity & climate:

if you sweat a lot, you need more water (In dry environments, your sweat may evaporate so fast you may not realize you have sweated).

The same goes for cold environments where you don't think you need to sweat or hydrate.

If you are exercising and are not sweating, perhaps you need more water so your body can sweat!

Are your lips cracked or skin dry? You may need more oils internally, but you may also need more water.

If you take diuretic items, you may need more water.

i.e. Caffeine or alcohol (plus it helps moderate consumption of alcohol, and may lesson dehydration caused hangovers--NOTE: not all hangover symptoms are due to dehydration) -- This is one of the biggest causes of the loss of our thirst reflex. (This includes the bottomless cola which gives us calories in addition to only a thirst quench)

If you take prescribed diuretics, consult with your doctor. (There have been some studies that show that depending on the cause water retention and/or kidney issues may be due to lack of proper hydration, and increased water intake may actually help)

Diet: many foods/dishes already have water. Fruits, Veggies, Soups, casseroles, juices, etc. Many also have electrolytes, salts and other good nutrients. Thus a dry high carb diet does no good. (In fact, converting the extra calories into fat is encouraged because it give off water. Burning those calories would take enough water for your body to function right avoiding the hydration deficit -- see the kreb cycle)
