Yes. There is an official template for it, but in general we look for:
- Scratches that go through the paint
- Dents bigger than a Golf ball
- Window glass damage that is obviously the result of abuse and not random rock chips from the road.
Other damage of a larger variety, such as deformed plastic body panels and other sorts of damage may be evaluated at the branch's discretion.
It is in your best interest as a customer to insist that all marks on the car be recorded on the rental contract at the time you take the vehicle, no matter how minor they seem. This is for your own protection, since a branch manager has a certain amount of discretion regarding damage evaluation on a car.
My branch is not especially obsessive about it, since certain kinds of dings and scrapes are just part of normal wear and tear on a rental car. Smaller branches will probably be pretty familiar with the cars on their books and what sorts of issues those cars might already have. There's one particular Impala that I recognize in our fleet because of the oddly-shaped stain on the floormats. :)
