and Henry Ford Although, you may think of Henry Ford and the Ford Model T when it comes to old time automobiles, you may not know that the Dodge Brothers of Detroit, Michigan contributed to Ford’s overwhelming success, and were contributing machinists to the evolution of cars and trucks today. After meeting Henry Ford, the Dodge Brothers were so impressed with Ford visions that they risked their business to come to a contractual agreement. Under the contract, Dodge would receive all of Ford’s assets if Ford went bankrupt, as he had before. This was included in the contract because Ford needed money to launch a car. The Dodge Brothers gave Ford $7,000 worth of car parts and $3,000 in cash, so he could launch his new car. In turn, the Dodge Brothers gained a 10% stake in the Ford Motor Company. What a smart investment because eventually the Dodge Brothers would make millions of dollars from this smart investment. Dodge manufactured every part of the Ford car except for the seats and tires. Dodge received $10,000 in stock dividends in the first year of their partnership with Henry Ford. In 1914 Ford closed his cars and trucks manufacturing plant in Detroit, and he didn’t need Dodge to manufacture his parts anymore. Unknown to Ford, excluding Dodge would eventually make his competition even tougher. The Dodge Brothers had an idea of their own. They knew all of the weaknesses of the Model T, and they began work on a car that could fiercely compete with Ford’s pride and joy. The Dodge car included all of the improvements, and the Dodge Brothers were still profiting from Ford stock. Ford was not very happy that the Dodge Brothers were using profits from Ford stock to create and manufacture his competition. To combat this, Ford stopped paying dividends to all shareholders in 1916. The Dodge Brothers sued and got $19 million back in dividends. In a tricky scheme to get his stock back and avoid paying any more to the Dodge Brothers, Ford announced his retirement in December 1918 and turned over control to his son, Edsel. He then went on an extended vacation. On March 5, 1919, however, a story broke that Ford organized another company to build a cheaper car that would sell for $250. If this was the truth, the Dodge Brothers knew it would put them out of business. The brothers were smart, and saw through Ford’s plan, but decided to sell their stock anyway. They received $12,500 per share, and as they suspected Ford’s announcement was false. But taking a look at how much they made from their initial investment of $10,000, they won by building a $200 million dollar venture with Ford.
