In line mode the ruler is drawn as great circles (shortest possible path), which should be as a "crow flies".
The ruler in Google Earth allows measurement of distances for a straight line or paths.
Note for large distances (e.g. > 2000 miles) lines are drawn different than the lat-lon grid lines in Google Earth.
per Google earth the distance is 6212.99 miles which is as the crow flies from Dakar to portland via crossing the Atlantic ocean.
Google Earth says the drive is 1,747 miles, and the 'as the crow flies' distance is 1,333 miles
Measure the distance it flies and the time it takes to fly that distance. Then divide the distance by the time to get speed.
115mi by road (maps.google.com), 87mi as the crow flies (http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm)
The driving distance between Atlanta, Georgia and Norfolk, Virginia is about 550 miles.
If you measure the straight line flight distance ("as the crow flies"), the total distance from Tamarac to Russia is 6,476 miles or 10,422 kilometers.
The new Google Earth 6.2 has the search fly-to interface completely redone. It no longer has an explicit fly-to as did previous versions of Google Earth. Search now automatically flies when the search results are returned. If one result then it jumps to that location; if multiple results then flies to the center of the view to see them all.
According to Google Maps:Driving 206 miAs the bird flies 163 Miles
According to Google Maps, the driving distance is about 254 km. It is approximately 169 km as the crow flies (straight line).
Google Maps gives 102 miles as the answer, travelling via the A606 and A1. Google Maps Distance Calculator (http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm) calculates an as the crow flies distance from Oakham's Market Place to Buckingham Palace, London, of 84.4 miles (135.9 km).
Sounds like you need a map. You could try maps.google.com. If you ask google for directions, it will tell you the DRIVING distance from one to the other. If you need the as-the-turboprop-flies distance, then you'll have to whip out your ruler and try to measure it on your screen. (Don't forget to convert from inches on the screen to miles on the ground.)
By road the distance is 101 miles (162 km). In a straight line 'as the crow flies' it is much shorter, just 80 miles (128 km). I got both of these pieces of information from Google Earth :-)
