Large families were quite common in the nineteenth century. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the second born in a family of eight. They were Samuel, Stephen, Elizabeth, Ellen, Alexander, Anne and Mary Longfellow. His younger brother, Samuel, became a well known hymn writer. Sister Ellen Longfellow died of Typhus in 1835. Anne was widowed at an early age and spent the rest of her life in the home she was born in. Brother, Alexander became a civil engineer. Sadly, older brother, Stephen was a troubled man who became an alcoholic.
