Misconception: Islam promotes honour killings of women/men

Background: An honour killing is when a family member is murdered by one or more fellow family members, when they believe the victim to have brought dishonour upon the family. The victims are usually female but can also be male.

The Quran has a very high regard for a person's life and only accepts the taking of a life in very limited circumstances:

It is because of this that We have decreed for the Children of Israel: "Anyone who kills a person who has not committed murder, or who has not committed corruption in the land; then it is as if he has killed all of mankind! And whoever spares a life, then it is as if he has given life to all the people."... [5:32]

...and do not kill the soul which God has forbidden, except in justice... [6:151]

And whoever kills a believer intentionally, then his reward shall be Hell, eternally abiding therein, and God will be angry with him, and curse him, and for him is prepared a great retribution. [4:93]

It should be noted that nowhere in The Quran is a person allowed to take the law into their own hands and act as judge, jury and executioner. "Justice" here refers to a court of law. Also, the only acts punishable by death in The Quran are for murder and causing corruption in the land (i.e. done on a large scale), as shown above.

Sometimes an honour killing is carried out due to sex out with marriage, but the punishment for this in The Quran is not death [see 24:2].

The recurring theme of equivalence in The Quran must be taken into account when deciding upon the punishment for any crime:

And those who, when gross injustice befalls them, they seek justice. The recompense for a crime shall be its equivalence, but whoever forgives and makes right, then his reward is upon God. He does not like the wrongdoers. [42:39-40]

Thus, the equivalent punishment for having one's honour or family honour compromised can never be murder.

What are honor killings in the middle east?

Honor Killings in the Middle East are not distinct from honor killings in other tribal areas of South Asia and Africa, so there is nothing uniquely Middle Eastern about them. Honor Killings are based on the concept of public shame. Unlike Western society, where people are seen to rise or to fall as individuals, in traditional Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African societies, the family as a whole carries honor and respectability or carries shame and disregard. In the more traditional areas, rape and other sexual crimes are seen to be the fault of the female victim (as opposed to Western culture which properly imposes blame on the assailant). As a result, a female victim of rape brings dishonor and shame on her whole family, just as if she had murdered someone. This same dishonor can also be brough on by other crimes and "crimes". In order for the family to restore honor, one of them must, in turn, murder her and "prove" that their moral uprightness remains strong. As a result, her father or her brothers (and in rare cases, her mother) will kill her to preserve the family honor. Understandably, many NGOs are trying to prevent honor killings and are trying to help women who believe that they are likely to be honor killed. However, there is fierce resistance to these efforts by traditional people, many of whom believe that such killings are mandated by their religion (usually Islam or Hinduism). Often local clerics do not clarify that honor killings actually violate the laws of those religions and are merely traditiional baggage from a foregone era.

How have honor killings been addressed in the Islamic community?

There is no origin for honor killings in Islam as a relegion. The holy quran had stated the adultery issue in a clear & detailed way for both men & women & in order to prove such a crime against any person it requires testimonies from 4 eye-witnesses who declare in full details under oath that they witnessed this crime at the same time in same details. It is clear then that this type of prove is completely impossible ( unless it was in a public show!!). Regarding the same issue, if a man accused his wife or any other woman for commiting adultery & failed to prove this as mentioned above he will be punished even if he didn't sue her in the court , she can sue him for defamation. These rules apply unless a man or a woman admits such crime & the punishment depends on whether the person is married or not. the singles are punished with 100 lashes while capital punishment is for the married ones & ofcourse punishment is under authorities control like any other crime, so if anyone killed another person for this reason he or she will be sentenced to death. The honor killings have nothing to do with Islam, it is a cultural social product of tribal fanatics in some Arabian countries & in this context, both christians & Muslims adopted this type of barbarian behaviour in these countries. Islam is 100% the great supporter of women.
