Japan has very fertile, good soil land being an archipelago. It has many natural resources and farming is abundant. It's tropical with a lot of wildlife and plants.
I should think that making a generalization such that a whole country hates something or thinks one way is very narrow-minded. All Japanese people don't think alike or have the same opinions. I'm sure there are some Japanese people who aren't fond of marine wildlife for whatever reason. But there are also environmental activists in Japan who strive to protect said wildlife. Some of Japan's policies still don't reflect the entire country. Japan has a long history of whaling to the consternation of many environmentally-active countries and groups; however, not all support such actions.
The recent Japanese earthquake impacted wildlife, primarily deep sea wildlife, damaging marine ecosystems and fish stock. The earthquake impacted the Galapagos island, and also it affected Lonesome George, the world's most valuable tortoise, the sole Pinta Tortoise, a subspecies of the Galapagos tortoise.
